Good Carbs & Bad Carbs

March 24, 2008 By: <ADMINNICENAME> Category: Weight Loss Food No Comments →

Good Carbs versus Bad Carbs…

You here the word “carbs” everywhere now days, and many diets now available either utlize Carbs in the diet or suggest against them.

This leads to alot of confusion! Should carbs be in? out? and why?

Lets start at the begining. What is a Carb?

A “carb” is just a abbreviation of “a carbohydrate”.

A carb is a type of calorie that contains an extra amount of energy, thus making you feel more energetic after consuming foods with a high carbohydrate content.  Take cakes and chocolate bars for a prime example, after you have eaten them you’ll feel very energetic because of the excess carbohydrate content.

Don’t be fooled into thinking all carbs are bad though, because they are not! This is complicated somewhat by having both “good carbs” and “bad carbs”.

Sugar is a bad carb, and most people believe they know how to avoid it.  But unfortunatly sugar in foods comes in many forms and can be tricky to spot. Learning to spot the use of these is essential in loosing weight.

A perfect example of this is Honey. It is believed that foods sweetened with honey are better for you than foods sweetened with sugar — but in reality honey is just as fattening as sugar.  In fact, honey is filled with the same fattening carbs as sugar.

How do Carbs Make Me Fat?

Sugar and other bad carbohydrates cause your blood sugar level to rise sharply after a meal. It is this blood sugar increase that is the problem with carbs, as when your blood sugar rises then your body is forced to over-produce a hormone called insulin.  Insulin is needed because it helps process excess blood sugar.  When the body is forced to create too much insulin it is also forced to store fat.

But if you eat good carbs (instead of bad carbs) then your blood sugar level will not skyrocket after each meal, and thus you can burn fat and lose weight much easier.  Plus, you’ll feel energetic all day on a more even level, without the “highs” and “lows” that most overweight people experience.

So to begin losing weight you need to change the types of foods that you eat each day, and you can do this by learning about the Fat Burning Foods.

South Beach Diet and the Atkins Low Carb Plan

March 05, 2008 By: <ADMINNICENAME> Category: Weight Loss Diets No Comments →

Popular diets of today are the Atkins diet and the South Beach diet. Lets have a look at the two and see what each one does and how it may be of some benifit.

The Atkins Low Carb Diet

The Atkins Diet is based on eating very few carbs, and this is especially true during the first stage of this diet.  The Atkins low carb diet is one of the strictest low carb diets on the market, especially during the fist stages.

To think that this plan was anything less that a strict low carb plan would be a mistake as this would set you up to fail before you have even started. The Atkins diet only allows 80 carb calories per day during the first stage (20 grams of net carbs is approximately 80 carb calories per day)……..that is less carbs than you will find in a large apple.

Stage 1 of the Atkins Diet is now detailed as ‘optional’. But even if you missed this stage it is still felt that the overall carb limitations make it a very strict low carb diet.

The Atkins diet should be started with a 100% comitment to succeed as only truly committed dieters will probably be able to withstand the first stage of this program.

The South Beach Diet

As the Atkins diet was the South Beach diet is also a fairly strict low carb program (again especially during the first stage) although it is probably not as rigid as the Atkins program.

Like the Atkins diet we find that the South Beach plan is also a bit too strict, in tearms that it limits carbs too much to be practical for everyday dieters. This is particuraly evedent in stage one with severely reduced carbs and other rules forbidding many foods.

For example, it has been noted that the higher carb foods available on the South Beach menu are limited in portions during the first stage of the diet. This prevents a normal amount of carbs from being eaten during this stage.

In fact, most of the foods which dieters are allowed to eat in “unlimited portions” (during stage 1) are protein foods and super-low-calorie vegetables.

For example, the South Beach menu allows unlimited lettuce during phase 1, but yet it limits the portions of “tomatoes” and “onions” and “peanuts”.

Additionally, the “sweet snacks” that are allowed on the South Beach menu are limited to a mere 75 calories per day during stage 1.

So even though the South Beach plan allows “sweet snacks” they are severely limited to just 75 calories per day! that’s less calories than a single large cookie contains.

So although the South Beach program is not as strict as the Atkins diet, it’s our opinion that both diets are fairly strict low carb programs — and we believe that both plans will be fairly difficult to follow for average dieters who are not truly committed, especially during stage 1.

Also both of these diets seem to have no “end” in sight — since both the Atkins plan and the South Beach diet never allow dieters to return to a normal carb lifestyle (where carbs don’t have to be closely watched).

Both of these diets do gradually allow more and more carbs to be eaten as time goes by of course (as time goes by the rules are relaxed a bit), but even after 6 months dieters are still told to watch their carb intake to some degree each day, and both diets seem to require a lifetime commitment of some sort.

So it’s a permanent lifestyle change which is required by these diets, and many dieters may find it difficult to never be able to enjoy their favorite carb-filled restaurant meals (which can be eaten completely “as served”, and without any restrictions).

So overall we think that both diets are not very practical for average dieters who are not 100% committed to making huge sacrifices for the long term, since we believe that many people will find it difficult to modify their entire lifestyle permanently.

Is Walking A Good Exercise To Lose Weight

Whether you want to lose lots of weight slim down by a few inches, or achieve a healthy heart, it all starts from that first thought to commit. Not only will you look great you will feel better and live longer. There are many ways to lose body fat and build muscle.

Easy! Right?…That all depends on how much weight you are aiming to loose. If it is more than a few pounds then a diet to lose body fat will help in your quest.

Going on a diet that claims will lose 10 pounds in two weeks will not do the will not work. Firstly losing that much weight that fast is not very healthy, and secondly using diets that claim the quickest way to lose body fat will not get you past that 10 pound weight loss for long.

You need to find a diet plan that works for you and your lifestyle and will help you lose your excess body fat in a healthy manner, and lets not forget exercise to lose body fat should be number one on your list. Unfortunately it is not always easy to resist the opportunity presented to you when you see that some diets can help you to loose those pounds faster than other diets available.

What you need to be looking for is a sustainable healthy diet plan with an increase physical activity that you can stick to while allowing yourself the occasional treats. You will find that it is easier to keep those pounds and inches off even after you resume a more or less normal lifestyle.

So be smart and first chose a diet plan that suits your body type, not what you wish your body type is. From there it’s then a hop skip and a jump to getting that body you always wanted. And whenever you know that you have excess body fat lose it as soon as you can, don’t let it pile up on you so that you task becomes that much harder, once again.

Three Day Diet

March 01, 2008 By: <ADMINNICENAME> Category: Weight Loss Diets No Comments →

You will find a huge cross section of fast weight loss diets doing the rounds at the moment. All of these weight busting plans have one aim, to make you slimmer. Providing you are sensible and you stick to only one diet at a time, you should succeed and notice some visible results quite quickly. The types of food you are allowed on theses fat busting diets vary from plan to plan. With any fast process there is always sacrifice, this is no exception. All these rapid weight loss plans predominantly use starving techniques.

There are a few lose weight fast plans out there that claim you can lose up to 10 pounds in three days. These plans will more than likely involve no food at all and rely on you just drinking liquid.

Using a three day diet you will be told you can expect to see a weight loss in the region of 5 to 10 pounds. Three day diets have two big problems in my opinion. One, You will probably put the weight straight back on again after your three days. Two, they can cause some health that you will want to take into consideration.

These diets are created to achieve a very rapid weight loss; the weight has to come of your body somewhere. Three day diets target your water retention as water is easily gotten rid of and weight quite a bit. All you would lose after your three days is your body water and no fat lose would occur.
